GTA 6 File Size: How Much Storage to Free Up

Rockstar hasn't confirmed GTA 6's install size. Here's a realistic estimate from GTA 5 and RDR2, and how much space to clear before launch.

Rockstar hasn’t published an install size for GTA 6, and anyone quoting an exact number is guessing. What we can do is set a realistic expectation from precedent, so you’re not scrambling on preload day.

What Rockstar has actually confirmed

  • Preload opens November 12, 2026 — a week before launch
  • Launch is November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
  • Physical copies are a download code in a box, so the full download applies either way

No install size. No day-one patch size. Those usually surface when storefront listings go live in the final weeks.

A realistic estimate from precedent

Rockstar’s recent open worlds give a defensible range:

  • GTA 5 — roughly 95GB on current-gen consoles after updates
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 — roughly 150GB on console

GTA 6 is a larger, denser, newer-generation world with higher-resolution assets, which points upward from RDR2 rather than down. Working assumption: somewhere around 150–200GB.

Two things could pull it either way. Modern compression on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is significantly better than last generation, which has kept some big releases smaller than feared. Against that, uncompressed audio for a game with this much voice work and radio content adds up quickly.

Plan for 200GB free and you’re very unlikely to be caught short. If it lands smaller, you’ve lost nothing but a bit of housekeeping.

Where it has to live

On PS5, games must run from the internal SSD or a compatible M.2 expansion drive. A USB drive can archive PS5 games but can’t run them — you’d have to copy back to internal storage first, which takes time you won’t want to spend on launch night.

On Xbox Series X|S, the same principle applies: current-gen titles need internal storage or the official expansion card. USB drives work for storage, not for playing.

Practical takeaway: if your internal drive is nearly full, moving other games to USB now is the cheap fix. You keep them installed-ish, and you free the internal space GTA 6 will need.

What to do before November 12

  1. Check your free space now, not on preload day.
  2. Clear or archive to about 200GB free — err high.
  3. Preload on November 12 so launch day is just an unlock, not a download.
  4. Budget for a day-one patch on top of the base install; these are routinely 5–20GB on major releases.

We’ll update this page with the real figure the moment Rockstar or the storefronts publish it.
